Database statistics: MAME SuperSet v0.140

Post by maeztro »

I am having trouble getting my head around the database statistics and how it is breaked down.

I am currently attempting to get the MAME SuperSet v0.140 complete. I am using a combination of RomCenter and Romulus (http://romulus.net63.net/). Each has certain strengths and weaknesses so I am using them together to get the best of both. However, the numbers don't add up consistently.

According to Romulus, the set consists of 9048 sets and 84492 roms. It doesn't break down mains, clones, bios, disks and samples. According to RomCenter, the set contains 9053 sets and 72981 roms.

RomCenter also breaks it down:
Number of sets: 9053
4520 mains sets (49.93%)
4480 clones (49.49%)
53 bios files (0.59%)
449 disks files (4.96%)
236 samples files (2.61%)

Number of roms: 72981
71603 programs roms (98.11%)
197 bios roms (0.27%)
399 disks roms (0.55%)
793 samples roms (1.09%)

How is the numbers 9053 and 72981 calculated? I have tried various combinations, including and excluding bios files, disk files, sample files etc but can't get the totals to add up properly. Then there is also the discrepancy between Romulus and RomCenter.

Can anybody help? Thanks.

9053 is the total number of games. It is the number of games displayed under the node 'all games'. Not that some entries like 'nes' have no roms.
72981 is the total number of different roms. Some roms are used in a lot of games. This includes samples and undumped roms.

I'm not sure what to show and probably it is not very relevant when it comes to compare with other tools.
Tell me what you want and I will change the datas.

2 Eric: 72981 is the number of unique roms? Perhaps Romulus does not count the unique but the total roms...

2 maeztro: Maybe there's something wrong with Romulus (or RomCenter)? The 9048 <> 9053 discrepancy is funny. Perhaps there is a reasonable explanation (or perhaps not and it's a bug)...

72981 is the number of unique roms (samples included). I think romulus count all roms, which is not very interessant. For example, bios roms should be counted only once I think.

Ok, so this difference is a matter of what numbers each program decides to show, which is logical and acceptable. The funny thing is the 9048 <> 9053 difference. It seems that either RC counts some sets twice or Romulus excludes some sets for some reason (which seems more possible).

Anyway, as you said:

It's all a matter of what each program decides to show as statistics. There is no standard on what should be shown so to try to compare the numbers output'ed by each program may be pointless.
