How to "upgrade" to a newer version

Whats the official way to upgrade an older version to the latest without loosing the settings?

Hi there,

Personally when upgrading RC4 version x to version y, i just copy the new files over the old ones and execute RC. This retains the old settings. Then, when opening a database, it is just upgraded to the new version (when necessary) and all paths are also retained.
