Fixed RC4 b1 performance issues or bugs ?

Post by MELERIX »

testing RC4 b1 and creating DB from emulator with MAMEUI32 0.162, memory usage can easily reach 550mb or more, making my PC practically unusable for several minutes, then RC4 b1 closes itself (I guess it crashed due out of memory).

My System:
CPU: AMD Sempron 145.
RAM: 1GB.
OS: Windows 10 Build 10130 (32 bits).

Yup, that would be my guess too. I suppose this is a rather unusual setup. From what i've seen in my laptop with 6GBs RAM, when creating a new db, the memory usage was about as much as yours (450-500 MB), so i guess this cannot be counted as a bug...

Count ~500 MB(stable) when creating a mame database. You also need 1 GB of free space on HD when creating/updating database for temp files.
I'm afraid I can't do much for that...

yes, with 32 bit version, and it runs ok :P

then RC4 b1 requires more memory than RC3.7.1 ?

because with RC3.7.1 I can create DB from MAMEUI32 0.160, the only issue was that it takes several minutes, but can be created anyway without major troubles.

maybe you can solve this, making RC4 autodetect the available free memory, and not use more than 50% of the available free memory ?

Nice! I knew that Win8 had memory-wise improvements from Win7 but i guess Win10 goes a long way.

In any case, it seems that this is a thing (the memory RC needs to go on) that will not be easy to overcome, at least not soon, so in the meantime can you create the mame db from another PC? I don't have an exact number but i'm estimating that the latest mane rdt, if 7zipped, it should be around 30-35MB so perhaps one of us can create and upload it somewhere or maybe Eric could post it here?

P.S. From what i've seen, loading a db (after having created it) consumes about 150-160MBs so you should be fine. I don't know how much the repair process consumes but i guess you'll have to try it out and see how it goes.

I don't have time this evening with the forum troubles. :(

yes, thanks.

later I'll try to create it in another PC, because is not a good idea having to request a DB for every new MAME released xD

I hope this performance issue/bug be fixed in the final release.

Hey, the forum is back. Are you OK with the db creation? Were you able to create it?

Ha. We've been swamped with releases with major changes lately, aren't we? RC, mame, tosec. Everybody has changed something in the way they import/export data. Anyway...

I'll try to generate the db later and upload it somewhere so you can get it.

Just wanted to point out a similar issue.

My specs:
Core i7-3770 CPU
16 GB RAM
Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64)

While creating DB with mame64 v0.162, I got an Out of Memory error and RC 4 crashed. At that moment the memory usage was around 1.3 Gigs. After trying to start over at some point, the Romcenter simply closed without any message whatsoever.

On another note, I was delighted to see the filter options for the likes of Bad Dumps, No Dumps, Samples etc...
Though specifying the filters before the creation of the DB means that, if I ever want to change any of those, I have to create the DB all over. Wouldn't it have been possible to specify the filters after creating the database?

Can someone with an 'out of memory' error post a log file ? (in C:\ProgramData\romcenter)
Thank you

I was trying the RC4 beta 2. Crashed just as before.
I'm using MAME 0.162 and I've created the database fresh by importing from emulator.

I've attached the log as requested in 'C:\ProgramData\romcenter' as romcenter.7z as well as the firebird.log from the Romcenter program folder.

As an aside, is there a way to exclude device roms from the romsets (for example qsound)

I improved dat import and it greatly reduces memory usage in dat import. This will be avail in next release.
